We have been quietly working behind the scenes on a new product – the BODdrum Deep – a 14 inch BOD which has a 6 inch (15 cm) deep shell versus the standard 4 inch / 10 cm deep.
Here you can see the Deep head to head with a standard 14 inch BODdrum in this photo – not only is the Deep deeper, but we have chosen a slightly different finish. Whereas the standard BODdrums have a matte black finish, the Deep is painted a deep charcoal colour with a slightly metallic quality to the paint and a semi gloss finish. The header image above gives you some idea, though being a close-up, and shot on a sunny day, the photo over-emphasises the metallic finish, it’s really very subtle.
We also have been working on customising the Evans Calf Tone head to get the sound we wanted for the Deep, but also as an alternative to the hydraulic head for our 16 and 18 inch BODdrums.
The whole combination has worked just as well as we’d hoped.
Adam Brown was down from Glasgow to visit his dad, who knows John from some of the local sessions, and they both came to visit us a day or two ago. One of Adam’s band mates plays a BOD, so Adam was interested to see our range. He loved the BODdrum Deep and bought the trial drum with our prototype head! In fact, he was so enthusiastic, he spilled the beans on the product before we could, posting a video on Instagram here. John has re-posted Adam’s video onto the BODdrums Facebook page here.
Take a look and a listen – use headphones if you can – this drum has fantastic resonance and intensity of sound at both the high end and the deep bassy end.
If you are not familiar, Adam Brown is a bodhrán and guitar player based in Glasgow, who plays with Rura and Ímar. Adam and his father Roger Brown made fantastic traditional bodhráns (R&A Bodhráns) for several years, but have closed the business.
We are just waiting for the drum heads to arrive, and then we hope to have the BODdrum Deep with us, ready to sell at the Warwick Folk Festival from 25 to 28 July, as well as Folk East, Towersey and Music Worldwide Summer Camp (aka Drum Camp) in August.
After Warwick, around the 1st August, we will have the BODdrum Deep available for sale on the website, with full details and photos.
