Description
The ME-5 is a traditional double ended beater made of makassar, but with shorter, distinctly ovoid ends which leave a longer mid section of 8mm diameter. Lighter in hand than the ME-4 but the short heavy bulbs, at 13 mm diameter, give a much more pronounced bass sound, full of attack. 23 cm long and 18 grams.
Makassar is one of the hardest and heaviest woods in the world, making it a perfect material for tippers. Note that Makassar is often called “makassar ebony” because the two woods look similar, but it is not ebony. There are two key differences between ebony and makassar: first, ebony is a solid dark colour, nearly black, whereas makassar has a beautiful lighter toned natural striping, and second, ebony is nearly 50% more expensive than makassar.
