Felt and split tippers make some wonderful special effect sounds with very little effort – Stevie Moises’ tippers do the work for you.
In addition to the models detailed below, do look at the Mo-Grip series page, for the FeltMo and ClickMo, which provide the same kinds of effects but with a different balance and grip.
With 15mm felt balls at each end of a lovely olive wood stick, this one is a beauty both to look at and to play. The felt produces a warm, velvety sound with gentle attack, but a nice full bass sound. Specifically designed for those who play in traditional and double-ended styles. Length 24.5 cm, weight a mere 17 grams.
Made of Makassar, one of the hardest and heaviest woods available, the N-EF 1 gives an even clicking sound, no matter how you hold it. It reacts quickly and you can control the click to create a clear but quiet sound or quite a powerful and assertive presence, always with a nice bass-y note. The secret is in the design: the ball-like split circular head has a hollow centre, so only the flanks are clicking. The flanks of the clicker curve slightly inward to prevent them becoming uneven, and the edges are smoothed so as not to damage your drum head.
Intentionally designed with only one clicking end , the rubber O-ring pictured is used strictly for shipping and storage purposes. Don’t try to use the rubber ring for adjusting the click intensity as with hotrod tippers, as that would only limit the balance and dynamic qualities of the stick.
Suitable for both double-ended and single-end playing styles, the N-EF 1 has a rubber grip to stabilise the tipper in your hand, and to prevent any breakaway of the flanks. Diameter 15 mm ends, 10 mm mid stick, length 22.5 cm, weight approx. 20 grams.
N-EF 2 Hi-hat
On his own website, Stevie Moises waxes lyrical about this tipper:
One of my own new favourites ! The sound of this “Makassar Ebony” split tipper with built-in beech center is less “clicky” than the N-EF 1 and more defined / present than a “Hotrod” tipper. If you close your eyes you think you hear a Hi-Hat of a drumkit. This tipper produces a louder and warmer bass than a usual tipper but gives more attack than a “Hotrod” tipper. Also very high “plopps” are easily to play without loosing the “tsch” of the Hi-Hat sound. This tipper incorporates the qualities of many tippers in one very unique effect tipper. …I just love it :o)
As with the N-EF 1, the flanks of the clicker curve slightly inward to prevent them becoming uneven, and the edges are smoothed so as not to damage your drum head. The tapered shape makes the tipper effortless to hold, which makes your playing more relaxed and easier, whether you play in a Kerry double-ended or a single-ended style. Diameter tapers from 13 mm to 10mm, length 26 cm, weight approx 22 grams.
N-EF 8 Dynamic
The N-EF 8 is similar in construction to the N-EF 2 model but the head is heavier and rounder, so this tipper has more presence and an earthier click, producing an overall more rounded tone and deeper bass and stimulates a variety of natural vibrations. Due to its light design, the tipper can be used with little or no exertion to produce powerful, dynamic playing, yet it is also wonderful for for soft playing with very little click. Of course the grip is designed to handle very comfortably regardless of your playing style or preferred grip.
As with the other split tippers, the flanks curve slightly inward to prevent them becoming uneven, and the edges are smoothed so as not to damage your drum head. Diameter is 13 mm and 12 mm, length 24 cm, and weight approx. 18 grams.
